This is what Jon told me when he first moved into the house in May. I was staying in Baltimore until June so the kids could finish school. Not exactly what you want to hear when moving into an old house! Apparently when the previous owners turned on the water after it had been shut off for a long time there was a leak behind the vanity. SO we gutted this bathroom, leaving only the tile on the floor and the standup shower (to the right in the picture). We had to replace some studs and treat the wood for mold, etc. Nice. Respiratory disease anyone? Everything went smoothly after Jon, his dad, and Grandpa Merrill worked on the plumbing and putting up the drywall. Our only mistake was hiring a guy from craigslist to mud and tape. Just don't look too closely at the seams!
We installed a new vanity, toilet, crown molding, door and door frame, window frame, lighting. On the left in the picture is a scrap of fabric that I stapled inside a frame I bought on Craigslist. Originally the frame was a dark brown so I gave it several coats of hi-gloss white and I love how it turned out. It is an easy and inexpensive alternative and adds lots of color and texture. On the window sill (it's hard to see because of the light) is a bowl filled with sand and seashells the kids find at Richmond Beach.
