I heard a fabulous idea today and I want to spread the word! While visiting a darling childrens' bookstore in the Greenlake area today called Mockingbird Books (one of Jon's client's manages the store) they mentioned starting a mommy/daughter book club. Isn't that a wonderful idea! I immediately latched onto the idea and sent an email around to all of my friends with girls about the same age. How fun to read the same book, plan fun themed nights of fun discussion and treats and simply enjoy something so worthwhile together.
Per the manager's suggestion my first book pick is called The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall. It sounds like a mix of The Secret Garden and Little Women and I can't wait to get started. Why don't you start one too!

I am going to go buy the book today so I can read it too! I LOVE children's literature!
This book is so cute! I read it over a year ago, and I can't wait until Meg is old enough to read chapter books to.
That is SUCH a great idea! I'll have to file that in my brain somewhere to remember in about 5 years!
As a school teacher, one of the most obvious differences that I have noticed between successful students and poor students is that the successful students all seem to love to read, and the poor students do not like reading very much. My successful students all seem to have a book in their backpack to pull out after they finish an assignment or test/quiz. All of you girls (my children) caught the reading bug, and I partly attribute that love to going to the library and participating in summer reading programs there. Also, I tried to let you pick books from the book sales at school (Scholastic Books, etc.) I also tried to read to you when you were young and to have a collection of books in the home. They say that it stimulates a child's interest in reading and learning of vocabulary when you read them something above their reading level. My 6th grade teacher, Mr. Lutjens, read to us in the afternoon every day. He read books such as THE HOBBIT, THE RED PLANET, THE MOUSE THAT ROARED, etc. I would read books myself, which I imagine was a good example, too. I would also put a limit on TV watching, and we had no video games (not that they are all bad). There are some good books out there for parents about getting children to love reading and to read well (I forget their titles). I would encourage all parents to work hard to instill that love of reading in their children! (That's my long-winded two cents worth!) XOX0 Mom
One of those books that talks about getting kids to love reading is Jim Trelease's The Read-Aloud Handbook . Also has an index of age-appropriate books in the back.
